How to Pass a Blood Drug Test in 2019

Blood drug testing is an analysis of a blood sample for illegal drugs. The sample of blood is drawn and then sent to a laboratory where it is screened. Knowing when you might face a blood test and how to pass it can help you get or keep your job and stay out of legal trouble.

When Might You Face a Blood Drug Test?

Blood tests detect illegal drugs in your body and to test your health. These tests measure the number of drugs in your blood at the time the blood is taken out of your body. Blood tests will find out how healthy you are or your protein levels, hepatitis levels, diabetes, nicotine levels, or cholesterol levels. Insurance companies might ask you to take a blood test so that they can look at your overall health.

Drugs like THC is detectable in the blood for only a few hours. This is why blood tests are generally only conducted in offices after an accident. The company wants to see if someone was on drugs and if their drugs caused the accident. Blood drug tests are not common because they are very expensive. Most of the time they are used for insurance purposes, or when you apply for a job that has safety issues.

Possible Urine Test Too

If you are asked to take a blood test, you will probably have to take a urine test too (Read how to pass a drug test). Insurance companies take on a lot of financial risks when they write a new insurance policy for companies. So, it is company policy that the insurance carrier needs to estimate how much risk they are taking on.

Part of this means testing employees for drugs so that they know how much safety risk they are taking on. Applicants will have to submit blood and urine tests to make sure their health status fits the insurance company pricing model.

How a Blood Test Works

Blood drug tests can measure specifically the presence of any drugs in your blood at that time. When your doctor examines your blood, he or she looks for the presence of diseases. With a blood drug test, a laboratory technician will examine your blood for traces of drugs.

How The Test is Administered

Blood drug tests are done by professional medical technicians. They draw a sample of blood and send it to a laboratory to be tested.

How Far Does This Test Go Back

The detection period for blood drug tests depends on the type of drug.
Below is a list of the detection time periods, or how long the drug will stay in your blood:

  • Amphetamines (except meth): 12 hours
  • Methamphetamine: 24 hours Barbiturates (except phenobarbital): 1 — 2 days
  • Phenobarbital: 4 — 7 days
  • Benzodiazepines: 6 — 48 hours
  • Cannabis: 2 days
  • Cocaine: 24 hours
  • Codeine: 12 hours
  • Morphine: 6 hours

Can There be False Positives?

False positives are possible. Five percent of people who fail a blood test fail because of a false positive. If you get a false positive, and you know that you are not guilty of taking drugs, you have to contest it.

Over the counter medications, foods, and prescriptions can cause a false positive. Foods that have poppy seeds in them, medications like Midol, and other prescriptions might flag as positive. There are over 250 over-the-counter and prescription drugs that can give you a false positive blood test.

If you get a false positive blood test, you can ask that another type of test be administered. Companies are legally required to do this if you ask. They can administer a hair test or a urine test. You can also show proof of the food you ate, the medicine you took, or prescriptions you are on. Companies can have your blood tested for those specific things, then rule them out of the results to make sure they do not flag your results.

What Happens if You Fail Your Test

If you are taking a blood test for a potential job, you will not get the job. Company policy says they cannot hire people who fail a drug test. If you already have a job and you are taking a routine blood test, you might get fired. You might also give up disability benefits if you get injured at work.

If you are taking a blood test because there was an accident or safety issue at work, you will probably be fired. This is usually an insurance policy. Remember, companies use blood tests instead of urine or hair immediately after an accident at work.

Companies cannot tell other people the results of your drug test. So they cannot tell other people in the office or other businesses unless you get fired because of drugs. If you get fired because of drugs, they can tell future employers who ask why you were fired. However, they cannot share that information with anyone else.
