The Types of Drug Tests

There are lots of times when you have to deal with a drug test. Maybe you want to get a new job in the military, or you want to become a government official. These are only a few of the many situations when you have to deal with a drug test. With that in mind, there are multiple types of drug tests, and each institution tends to opt either for a specific type of drug test or a combination of tests. Here you have a list with some of the most widely encountered drug tests!

Urine Drug Test

The urine drug test checks for drug metabolites and drugs. Usually, it’s the best method for screening people that use PCP, benzodiazepines, methadone as well as marijuana or cocaine. This is a simple and noninvasive drug testing method. That being said, it does have some downsides such as not showing the drug levels. Sometimes, the urine drug test can also bring in some false positives, which is obviously something that you want to avoid. Urine tests that are positive will require some additional testing too, so they aren’t 100% valid on their own.

Mouth Swab Drug Test

This type of drug test is also known as an oral fluid or saliva test. The test requires a professional to collect saliva from the job applicant’s mouth. The saliva will then be tested for methamphetamines, amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana and even alcohol. A lot of companies use them, and that’s mainly because these mouth swab drug tests can be inexpensive. Plus, saliva is very easy to collect, and the results are pretty accurate. However, even in this situation, some further testing is required to be 100% sure that the results are positive.

Blood Drug Test

The blood drug test is more invasive when compared to the others. That being said, it can also showcase the medication/drug levels in your blood. This is not used to test the presence of illegal drugs, instead it will work mostly in the case of legal investigations. However, it is very accurate, and it offers a good insight!

Hair Drug Test

With this type of minimally invasive test, you can find any amounts of PCP, opiates, marijuana or cocaine in a person’s system. The reason why this works is that the hair follicles have blood vessels and those retain traces of drugs for quite a long time. Some companies prefer this type of test because it’s easy to do and at the same time it does showcase if the person in question is a regular drug consumer or not.

Fingernail drug test

Drugs are retained for up to 2 weeks in your nail clippings after you ingest them. These tests are accurate, and they will always be valid, regardless what fingernail is chosen for examination. Drug use can be found up to 8 months after you last used them, and toenail clippings can showcase drug consumption a year afterward!

There are a multitude of drug tests, and each one of them tends to focus on specific features. That being said, some of these tend to be more accurate than others. Even so, most of the time companies want subjects to undertake at least 2 different drug tests to ensure that there are no false positives!
