Does Working Out Detox Marijuana From Your Body?

Working out as a way to help you pass a drug screen – in particular for those who consume marijuana – is perhaps one of the healthier home remedies that has been suggested; however, since THC is stored in fat cells, can burning fat cells by exercising actually help to rid your body of THC?

Methodology

The methodology is simple enough: You simply run, cycle, lift weights, work out on the elliptical machine, or take part in any exercise routine in the days and hours before a drug screen. Different sources recommend different levels of intensity and duration of the workout sessions, from fairly mild workouts with specific intervals of rest, to extremely strenuous, physically challenging routines.

Sweating is highly encouraged with method, and since sweating is often linked to the generic umbrella of “detoxification”, this is probably one of the reasons this home remedy is a popular one, and indeed some sources even suggest adding sauna time into your workout routine to increase your chances of successfully passing a drug test. There is also the idea that if THC is stored in fat, burning fat is a way to reduce THC levels.

Scientific Evidence

A study was conducted in 2013 to monitor the effects of exercise on the THC levels in a person’s body. The study found that not only did the levels of THC not decrease with exercise, but that the participants in the study actually had higher levels of THC after exercising. This is thought to perhaps be a result of the fact that the participants burned fat during exercise, therefore they rereleased the THC stored in the fat cells back into their blood stream. So, not only did the participants have higher levels of THC in drug screenings done by blood tests, but they also had a bigger chance of testing positive even if the marijuana consumption was not recent.

In addition, studies have found that the more fat a person has in their body, the higher the levels of THC are going to be in their blood stream, regardless of the amount of marijuana they consume.

Summary

THC is stored in your body’s fat cells, and the greater the number of fat cells in your body, the greater amount of THC your body can store; however, if you consume marijuana, not only does exercising not help you rid your body of THC, but it actually puts you at increased risk of failing a drug screening. So, the more fat cells you have in your body, the greater the amount of THC that is going to be released back into the blood stream as you burn those fat cells off.

Sweating is also not going to have an impact on THC levels, as THC is excreted only through the urine and feces. No matter how much or how hard you exercise, no matter how much you sweat, you’re only increasing your odds of failing a drug test.
